Eye9ja hs obtained a report suggesting that the former President of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe is dead.

The report was confirmed in a statement by Emmerson Mnangagwa, Zimbabwe’s president.

Mugabe died in the early hours of Friday at the age of 95.

“It is with the utmost sadness that I announce the passing on of Zimbabwe’s founding father and former President, Cde Robert Mugabe,” Mnangagwa posted on Twitter early on Friday.

“Mugabe was an icon of liberation, a pan-Africanist who dedicated his life to the emancipation and empowerment of his people. His contribution to the history of our nation and continent will never be forgotten.

“May his soul rest in eternal peace,” Mnangagwa said.

Recall that Mugabe was hospitalised in Singapore for months over an undisclosed ailment.

Although, media reports have it that the former president was battling prostrate cancer; reports that officials have denied severally but have continued to emphasise that the former president was being treated for cataract.

The circumstances surrounding his death are still sketchy.

Recall that Mugabe was the longest serving president of Zimbabwe and was forced to resign in 2017 following protracted intraparty crisis.

He was succeeded by his estranged deputy, Emmerson Mnangagwa.
